HISTORY OF ALEPPO SOAP

Aleppo laurel soap takes its name from the ancient Syrian city where it was first crafted. This centuries-old formula is celebrated globally for its gentle, nourishing benefits and all-natural composition. Laurel oil—often called Syria’s “green gold”—is harvested annually from November to March, after olives and laurel berries are pressed into their precious oils. Each bar requires one full year to make, reflecting a tradition rooted in patience, purity, and ancestral knowledge.

Our Aleppo soaps are made by Hassen, who has worked in the laurel soap trade since 1984. Despite the immense challenges caused by the war in Syria, he continues this artisanal craft with dedication and resilience. Connecting his soaps to a global market helps support local farming communities and contributes to Syria’s economic sustainability.

Once the soaps arrive at our Denver warehouse, they are individually packaged by hand and distributed across the U.S. Each purchase supports the advancement of artisan entrepreneurs—both in the Middle East and in the United States—preserving a craft that has shaped generations.
